Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by 97 runs in Compaq Cup 1st Match - Samarweera's century helps SL a bonus point

Thilan Samarweera hit a brilliant century in the 1st match of Compaq Cup and helped Sri Lanka toa big 97 runs win against New Zealand on Tuesday, September 8 at Colombo. This 97 runs win also earns Sri Lanka a crucial bonus point in the short tournament.

Sri Lanka opted to bat first made 216 for 7 wickets thanks to a brilliant century by Samarweera in a difficult condition. Samarweera hit 104 runs with 10 fours well supported by Angelo Mathew with 51 runs.

New Zealand lost 3 wickets for just 7 runs in 5 overs and never come back in the match and only Grant Elliot scored 41 runs and New Zealand all out on 119 runs in 36.1 overs. Lasith Malinga took 4 wickets for 28 runs.

Sri Lanka 216 for 7 (Samaraweera 104, Mathews 51, Bond 3-43) beat New Zealand 119 (Elliott 41, Malinga 4-28) by 97 runs

The Compaq Cup (Sri Lanka, India and New Zealand - Triangular Series) is the perfect build up competition for the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa. Ist match of triangular series will be played between New Zealand and Sri Lanka on 8th September, 2009 at at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. The Match will start at 14:30 local, 09:00 GMT.
