Australia knocked out of ICC T20 World Cup 2009 – Srilanka beat Australia by 6 wickets

Sri Lanka 160 for 4 (Sangakkara 55*, Dilshan 53) beat Australia 159 for 9 (Johnson 28*, Mendis 3-20, Malinga 3-36) by six wickets

Ajantha Mendis the star bowler of Srilanka, scalped three important wickets to restrict Australia to a achievable score of 159 for the loss of 9 wickets. Mitchell Johnson and D Hussey scored 28 runs each which was the highest score by the Australians. Ajantha Mendis with his surprise ball took three top Australian wickets that of Ricky Ponting, Watson and M Hussey. Malinga too scalped three wickets along with him to put immense pressure on the Australian batting lineup.

Brett Lee scored 15 quick runs in 5 balls and also took 2 wickets of Sri Lanka but this effort of his could not stop Sri Lanka to romp to victory with a solid batting performance by the captain Kumara Sangakara who scored and unbeaten 55 runs in 42 balls to take his team to the super eights of ICC T20 World Cup.

Netherlands defeat England in a thriller - ICC T20 World Cup opens with a surprise

Shocking defeat for host England at the hands of Netherlands, one of the weaker sides considered in international cricket. England placed in a tight situation with a must win situation against Pakistan.

England started very well with both the openers Ravi Bopara continuing his good batting form scoring 46 runs while his partner Luke Wright with a brilliant 71 runs was the star performer for England. 

England went ahead to score 162 for 5 (Wright 71, Bopara 46) 

A dream win for Netherlands (Holland) in this ICC T20 World Cup. de Grooth of Netherlands blazed with the bat scoring an invaluable 49 runs to guide the team to victory. The middle order also gave vital support with some valuable knocks by P Borren (30 of 25 balls) and RN ten Doeschate ( 22 of 17 balls).
