Bangladesh win ODI series against Wes Indies – BAN defeat WI by 3 wickets in a thriller

Bangladesh's players celebrate their ODI series victory over the West Indies, West Indies v Bangladesh, 2nd ODI, Dominica, July 28, 2009

Bangladesh win the ODI series by three wickets;
Bangladesh 276 for 7 (Shakib 65, Ashraful 64) beat West Indies 274 for 5 (Dowlin 100*, Smith 44)

Bangladesh is sailing high with their first Test series win and now they have managed to get the ODI series too under their belt. The match was quite a thriller and Bangladesh managed to win this one by chasing a decently large total of 274.

None other than Shakib and Ashraful took the lead of getting the Bangladesh side to a 3 wicket victory with an interesting chase of 274 runs.
West Indies put into bat first scored 274 runs thanks to the maiden century by Travis Dowlin and a good partnership developed along with Devon Smith who scored 44 runs. West Indies must have been confident about the run chase which the Bangladesh team had not been able to score something beyond this. But Shakib and Ashraful had different plans, they steadied the innings with a brilliant partnership after Raqibul Hasan couldnot hang around longer.

Bangladesh will cherish this chase and the series win thanks to the brilliance of Shakib Al Hasan the new captain of the side in Mashrafe’s absence.

Bangladesh vs. West Indies 2nd ODI Live Scores, BAN v WI ODI Preview

Going one down in the ODI series West Indies team have complained that the pitches are helping the visitors more than the host due to the slow nature of the pitches the spin attack of Bangladesh has been able to dominate the Test series and the first ODI which was held at Dominica.

Bangladesh can expect a hard and bouncy pitch as the curators might struggle to get the team some home benefit by creating hard and bouncy pitches to trouble the Bangladesh batting lineup. Bangladesh does not have any renowned pace attack thus West Indies can rely on that.

Bangladesh Win 1st ODI against West Indies, Shakib, Hasan Seal Victory – BAN v. WI ODI Series

Shakib Al Hasan the nemesis of the young West Indies team gave yet another knock out punch to the second-string West Indies team. Shakib surprised the host by opening the match scoring a brilliant 54, and Ashraful gave support in the middle getting 57 runs. Kemar Roach was the most successful bowler for the Windies taking 5 wickets, but he too could not stop Bangladesh from scoring a competitive 249 runs losing 9 wickets. The score seemed too large for a weakened West Indies team who had a bad Test series against the same opponent.

Shakib’s was high in confidence and went straight into attack mode by starting the bowling himself along with Razzak who made a successful comeback taking 4 West Indies wickets to mark a great return with Bangladesh winning the match by 52 runs.

West Indies Senior Players End Strike, Available for ODI Series

After a humiliating whitewash 2-0 defeat by Bangladesh, West Indies cricket board and the senior players committee have agreed upon the appointment of former Commonwealth secretary general Shridath Ramphal as arbitrator for the contractual issues which had forced the senior players to go on a strike and boycott the Test series. The second-string team couldnot handle the spin wizardry of Bangladesh and handed them their first overseas series victory.

West Indies board had been in such situation many a time and should have learnt some lesson by the loss of a home test series against minnows like Bangladesh.

The senior players have made themselves available for the ODI series against Bangladesh, which will make it interesting how the Bangladesh team tackles the task of facing Gayle and company. West Indies might come on heavily on Bangladesh to avenge the Test loss, and Bangladesh have come out chest thumping, with confidence full to the brim and it should provide an interesting short series of ODI matches.

Shakib Al Hasan sizzle as Captain, Best Player of the Series

Shakib Al Hasan - "Man of the Series"

Shakib Al Hasan is the latest buzz making rounds in the Bangladesh cricket fraternity for his all round performance in the recently concluded Test Series (captain, spin bowler & batsman, agile fielder). His performance as a standing captain in place of the injured Mashrafe Mortaza, paid rich dividends with a team well handled resulting in a clean sweep of the West Indies.

Shakib's statistics of the West Indies series:

Shakib Al Hasan's Batting statistics :
2 Test Matches (4 innings)
159 runs with the bat (96* highest)

Shakib Al Hasan's Bowling statistics:
2 Test Matches (4 innings)
13 wickets
109.1 overs
31 maidens
Gave away 244 runs
5/70 best bowling figure in an inning
8/129 best bowling figure in a Test

These figure suggest the all round effectiveness of the player and thus rightly deserves the "Best Player of the Series"

Bangladesh celebrate their first ever Series win on foreign soil

Match synopsis:

Bangladesh 232 (Rahim 48, Raqibul 44, Roach 6-48) and 217 for 6 (Shakib 96*, Raqibul 65, Sammy 5-55) beat
West Indies 237 (Dowlin 95, Richards 69) and 209 (Bernard 69, Shakib 5-70) by four wickets

Bangladesh tasted first blood of a Test series win in the history of Bangladeshi Test Cricket. Standing Captain Shakib Al Hasan along with Raqibul Hasan saw Bangladesh through to outscore the 215 runs that were required to lift the match and the series. Bangladesh needed to win / draw this match to win its first ever series and that they did in style not missing out on an opportunity and pounced on the second string West Indies team like a hungry Tiger.

Darren Sammy tried to stop the Bangladeshi chase with his 5 wicket haul Raqibul and Shakib Al Hasan were unstoppable. Shakib scored an unbeaten 96 runs to lead Bangladesh to a memorable Test series victory.

This victory will be more memorable as Bangladesh wins its first test series victory on foreign soil and not at home.

Ban v. WI 2nd Test - Day 1 Update - West Indies face the heat of Bangladeshi Spinners

Summary of day 1:

Bangladesh 35 for 1 (Tamim 14*, Enamul 5*) trail West Indies 237 (Dowlin 95, Richards 69, Mahmudullah 3-44) by 202 runs

West Indies faced the heat of Bangladesh’s spin attack, managing to score just 237 runs in the first innings on Day 1 of the second test at Grenada. Only Richards (69 runs) & Dowlin (95 missing out on a century) managed to get some decent scoring, rest all failed to the spin trio of Bangladesh.

Mahmudullah continuing with his spin magic in the second test, troubled the West Indies batsmen. Shakib Al Hasan leading the BAN side in the absence of Mashrafe Mortaza did a splendid job of using Mahmudullah in short burst and carrying on with long spells himself and Enamul Haque Jr. The spin trio of Mahmudullah, Shakib and Enamul took 9 of the West Indian batsmen to leave a huge dent in the Windies side.

Bangladesh faltered early with their batting losing out Imrul Kayes the opening batsman.

Bangladesh vs. West Indies 2nd Test Live Scores from St. George’s, BAN v WI 2nd Test Scores & Commentary

Bangladesh can create history based on how they play the next 5 days. It a golden opportunity to win their first Test series in international cricket. It might be that West Indies is playing a second-string team but for records it would be a series win for Bangladesh which will help boost their confidence.

Mashrafe Mortaza would be unhappy captain to miss out of being part of the playing 11 who would go ahead to achieve this feat. Shakib Al Hasan will take his role of leading the side as he did in the previous test match which he led the team by example to a thrilling victory with his superb bowling performance.

The team composition for both the sides:

Bangladesh: (probable) Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Mohammad Ashraful, Raqibul Hasan, Shakib Al Hasan (captain), Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah, Shahadat Hossain, Rubel Hossain, Nazmul Hossain.

West Indies: (probable) Omar Phillips, Dale Richards, Floyd Reifer (capt), Travis Dowlin, David Bernand, Ryan Hinds, Chadwick Walton (wk), Darren Sammy, Kemar Roach, Ryan Austin, Tino Best.

Bangladesh win 1st Test against West Indies – BAN defeat WI in a thrilling end

Bangladesh dream comes true, of winning another Test match after their win some years ago. Bangladesh should be thankful to West Indies seniors who had earlier boycotted the series due to issues with renewing contract with the WI board. The WI board adamantly sent in the second string team to play against Bangladesh.

The fresh West Indies team didn’t have any answer to the Bangladeshi spin attack and they crumbled under pressure to give Bangladesh an emphatic win.

Brief synopsis of the match:
Bangladesh 238 (Mortaza 39, Roach 3-46) and 345 (Tamim 128, Sammy 5-70) beat
West Indies
307 (Phillips 94, Bernard 53, Mahmudullah 3-59) and 181 (Bernard 52, Mahmudullah 5-51, Shakib 3-39) by 95 runs

Mahmudullah excelled with figures of 5-51 but Shakib Al Hasan was brilliant who troubled the West Indies batsmen the most with all sorts of variations.

Wild celebration was seen on the ground with the limping Bangladeshi captain Mashrafe Mortaza rushing to the ground to congratulate his team mates. Mashrafe would be happy to win his first game as a captain.
